I’m fortunate in working almost right under a skylight. Whenever the sun shines like it is today, my spirits lift. What kind of light do you have at work? How does it effect you?
One of the best books I’ve seen that begins to capture the look of different kinds of light inside buildings and how it effects us is Light Revealing Architecture by Marietta S. Millet published in 1996. There must be more books or websites like this out there – any suggestions?

I sit one desk in from the window in an open workstation (no vertical separation between me and my neighbor – AT ALL) – which is great, because the light comes straight to my desk. On all but the cloudiest days I could work with the lights off. I used to sit more toward the center of the space and have found that I am much happier when I can see outside (even though I just look at light bouncing off a rock wall).

Direct access to daylight and outside views are a must for me!! Our old office was on the fifth floor interior courtyard of a very tall development in downtown Atlanta. Even when it was a cloudless summer day the interior office was dim and dull. Now we’re on the 41st floor with views in all directions! It’s great to be able to see the sunny sky and the wind blowing the clouds past the windows! It definitely is nice to know what’s going on outside and get some rays during the day!

I work for a surgeon and whoever designed this part of the hospital had no creative inspiration at all. Imagine giving the doctors windows (whose blinds are down permanently because of privacy issues) and the gals who work the hard yards out the front have divine fluorescent lights and grey walls, hello! To combat lack of light, real light and scenery, my walls are covered with inspiring pictures, stuff from magazines and I keep the doctor’s blinds open all times unless there are patients inside to bring some of that beautiful daylight inside. It has made a huge difference when you walk into the office, instead of seeing an office at the end with blinds down, there is daylight and green, it is heaven! Dreaming for the day when those things are the priority!
